Here is a chance to own a little of America's history. This attractive and historic engraved cancelled capital stock certificate is associated with the Magma Copper Company and was printed by the American Banknote Company. It is genuine and has an ornate border and a "vignette" showing the mine and mill flanked by two men. It shows printed signatures of the company's officers. A mountain stained blue and green by copper in the Clifton-Morenci district of Arizona was discovered by soldiers in 1871. In June 1910 one William Boyce Thompson realized the commercial value of ore processing close to the mines in the Silver Queen region in Superior (Arizona, USA) and formed the Magma Copper Company. The mountain, near Superstition Mountain next to Superior, Arizona, became the Silver Queen Mine belonging to Magma Copper Company. This company also owned most of the Magma Arizona Railroad Company railway line from Superior to the Arizona Eastern rail road north of Florence at Webster, later called Magma. The Arizona Magma Railroad was the last railroad in the United States to use steam engines. Magma's oldest steam engine was used in the movie How The West Was Won. A huge smelter was constructed in 1914 and continued successful operation until 1981, when copper mining began to diminish in the Superior area. The Broken Hill Proprietary Company (BHP, the largest company in Australia and one of the biggest natural resource companies in the world) bought Magma in 1996, a year after copper was selling for a record-high $1.40 a pound. By 1999, copper had plummeted to 63 cents a pound and BHP laid off 2200 workers in San Manuel, essentially closing the mine. The certificates charm is that they are used. No two are exactly the same, with the backs often bearing a number of official stamps. The certificates are all cancelled and the dates on the certificate vary. They have no intrinsic value, but they do look great framed! You might like to mount your certificate in a mahogany frame but a light wood works as well. Each certificate is 12 x 8 inches (about 30.5 x 20.3 cm). You can choose green certificates (each for 100 shares), or orange (each for some number less than 100 shares). Certificates are shipped in a cardboard lined envelope to prevent damage during transit. With each order we'll send you a free silky periodic table bookmark and a free glossy laminated postcard sized periodic table for your noticeboard!
