This elegant 30k carmine-rose Russian stamp was issued 1969 to mark the publication in 1869 of Mendeleev's periodic classification of the elements (the periodic table). Dmitri Mendeleev (1834-1907) was born at Tobolsk in Western Siberia. He (with several others) is known for his enormous contributions to formulating the structure of the periodic table. Mendeleev made several predictions concerning missing elements based upon his periodic system. His periodic table were presented to the Russian Chemical Society in March 1869 and published by that Society in the same year. A German abstract of the paper was published in Zeitscrift für Chemie [D. Mendelejeff, Zeitscrift für Chemie, 1869, 12, 405-406] and it is this abstract that is quoted so widely in the West. The block contains a single stamp. The stamp is framed by a copy of Mendeleev's handwritten notes about the periodic classification and it is a type set copy of these notes that appears in the Zeitscrift für Chemie abstract. Note the date on the sheet: 1869. This stamp block (about 102 x 75 mm) is postally unused (unfranked) and looks excellent when mounted on black in a light frame. We have not provided such a frame to keep the weight down for posting. With each order we'll send you a free silky periodic table bookmark and a free glossy laminated postcard sized periodic table for your noticeboard! We only have a few of these stamps at present so a limit of one each please!
