Electrical breakdown in gas

Does anyone know what is the parameter that charaterizes the dielectric strength of a pure gas such as argon?
I am looking for the dielectric strength of argon and nitrogen at room temperature.
It seems that nitrogen has a better dielectric strength than argon, despite their similar ionization potential. What's the explanation for that? Is it because nitrogen is a molecular gas, and then the electrons are kept in the energy levels resulting from this structure?

Thanks for your help,
