Reactivity series question
Submitted by Anonymous on 29 January 2006 - 8:33pm.
Whilst preparing a project for a science symposium I have encountered a problem. I wanted to put six metals (Cu, Fe, Ni, Ti, Zn, Cr) into a reactivity series. I found out through the use of internet how to arrange five of thes (all but Ti) and the problem is that I have no idea where in the reactivity series Ti fits. Can anyone help me and tell me between which two metals, from the six given, Ti is in the reactivity series.
Thanks in advance

i assume you mean the reacticity towards H+?
In that case, the simplest solution would be to look up the standard electrode potentials for the requested metals.
I get this series:
Ti<Cr<Zn<Fe<Ni<Cu
does this match with what you found yourself?
Frodo here re-raises a good point: "Reactivity" is very vague.
You always need to be more specific about reactivity, if you want accuracy. This is done by saying "reativity towards..."
oops... didn't realise that. To be honest I have no idea what kind of reactivity I'm looking for, but I'll describe the experiment and its implications.
We're studying the thermite reaction and we want to prove that the bigger the difference in reactivity between aluminium and the metal of the oxide the more vigorous the reaction is. We wanted to show the reactivity series we got (but I just can't place Ti anywhere since the difference is small) and what I got is:
Most reactive- Zn-Cr-Fe-Ni-Cu -Least reactive
I hope you can tell me what kind of reactivity I'm looking for.
Thanks in advance
