Magnesium Hydroxide
Hello,
I was wondering what might be occuring when I put some 3% hydrogen peroxide in some magnesium hydroxide slurry and some of the volume is reduced, is this producing magnesium peroxide? I have done web searches left and right to try to determine what happens when you add hydrogen peroxide to magnesium hydroxide, but can't find anything. A little background: I started out with 500mg of salt from the Dead Sea. Next, I added some sodium hydroxide solution to precipitate out (mostly) magnesium (6mL of precipitate), mainly in the hydroxide form. Then I do a couple of water washes to remove the majority of soluble salts. Next, with mostly magnesium left behind, I add some 3% hydrogen peroxide solution. Now there is only 3mL of precipitate. If I tap the 25mL graduated cylinder I have it in, bubbles (oxygen?) come out of the precipitate. I am trying to determine if the magnesium hydroxide should react with the hydrogem peroxide, or if there is something else is being dissolved or reacting with the hydrogen peroxide other than the magnesium to cause this reduction in volume.
Inquisitively,
Nick
