The sp3C-H bond alkylation of 2-pyridylethanols upon reaction with alkenes, with a [RuCl2(arene)]2 catalyst and Cu(OAc)2[middle dot]H2O proceeds via a tandem dehydrogenation/alkylation with alkenes of the resulting ketone.
