Reaction of (Ar[prime or minute]NacNac)ZnI with K/Hg gave {(Ar[prime or minute]NacNac)Zn}2Hg (1), the first example of a bond between two different Group 12 metals. DFT and QTAIM analyses suggest a formal Zn(I)-Hg(0)-Zn(I) linkage; 1 reacts with I2, FpI or Fp2 to give products of the type (Ar[prime or minute]NacNac)ZnX (X = I or Fp; Fp = CpFe(CO)2).
