In contrast to its aqueous chemistry, neptunium exhibits a highly complex redox behavior in the ionic liquid betaine bistriflimide, [Hbet][Tf2N]. Spectroscopic studies have shown for the first time that up to three oxidation states (IV, V and VI) and up to six neptunium species can exist simultaneously. Both redox reactions and coordination of betaine lead to an unprecedented stability of Np(IV) and Np(VI).
