From the interplay of high-resolution STM imaging/manipulation and DFT calculations, we have shown that the formation of an organometallic complex involving copper adatoms by metal-alkene interactions can be successfully achieved in a relatively high yield, where the specific molecular adsorption geometry is the key for facilitating the copper-alkene interaction.
