Ta(NMe2)4[N(SiMe3)2] adopts the square pyramid stereoisomer with an apical N(SiMe3)2 group before rare [small alpha]-SiMe3 abstraction by an amide ligand, yielding the imide Ta([double bond, length as m-dash]NSiMe3)(NMe2)3 and Me3SiNMe2. The imide is then trapped by RN[double bond, length as m-dash]C[double bond, length as m-dash]NR to give guanidinates.
