Structural and luminescence studies of the new nitridomagnesoaluminate CaMg2AlN3

The luminescent nitridomagnesoaluminate, CaMg2AlN3, was synthesized in a closed system by solid-state reaction from binary nitrides. Structure solution was aided by ultrahigh-field solid-state NMR spectroscopy and DFT calculations.

Oxidative addition of SiH4 and GeH4 to Vaska's compound occurs in a cis manner but two isomers can be obtained according to whether H is trans to CO or Cl. Only the isomer with H trans to CO is observed for SiH4, whereas both isomers are observed for GeH4.

Effects on the NMR spectra of a paramagnetic metal ion are clearly observed by comparing identical sandwich molecular structures of diamagnetic [3,3[prime or minute]-Co(1,2-C2B9H11)2]- with paramagnetic [3,3[prime or minute]-Fe(1,2-C2B9H11)2]-.

Excellent correlation is found between standard QTAIM metrics and An-N bond lengths, and with N-N bond lengths and vibrational frequencies, but much poorer correlations exist with An-N and An-O interaction energies. Superior correlations are found between interaction energies and the change in the QTAIM charge on compound formation.
