Nickelalactone derivatives with an allyl subunit containing different mono- and bidentate ligands were synthesized and characterized. The introduced neutral ligands strongly affect the structures of these versatile molecules and can be used to modulate their stabilities.

A dinuclear Cu(II) complex 3, having an unprecedented in situ formed 2,6-piperidin-4-one-based ligand produced from a flexible Schiff-base ligand HL1, can be yielded as a side product in Cu(OAc)2[middle dot]H2O-NH3[middle dot]H2O dissolved in methanol-acetone besides the expected dinuclear Cu(II) complex 1.

In contrast to other NiII amino carboxylato or peptide complexes which typically contain five membered NO or NN chelate rings, the macrocyclic complex [Ni2L([small mu ]-Cl)]+ with its cleft-like structure enables a selective carboxylate coordination. The encapsulation of the biomolecules prevents the formation of intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions, which in turn affects their structures and solubilities.
