Two new dicyanovinyl (DCV) functionalized triarylboranes (Mes2B-[small pi]-DCV, for 1: [small pi] = C6H4, for 2, [small pi] = 2,3,5,6-tetramethyl-phenyl) are prepared and structurally characterized. A small structural perturbation induced drastic changes in the optical properties of 1 and 2. The dual receptor 2 can selectively discriminate F- and CN- ions.
