CuAAC click reactions for the design of multifunctional luminescent ruthenium complexes

CuAAC (Cu(I) catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition) click chemistry has emerged as a versatile tool in the development of photoactive ruthenium complexes with multilateral potential applicability. Three general concepts for their synthesis and selected applications are discussed.

Li/Cl phosphinidenoid complexes 2a-c react with benzaldehyde to give 3a-c, but with benzophenone formation of complexes 4 and 5 was observed, the latter revealing the elimination of HCPh3.

Highly selective BODIPY-clickates for mercury sensing are reported. These BODIPY clickates exhibits emission in red region with unprecedented large Stokes shifts (116 and 154 nm) upon mercury ion binding due to the intramolecular charge transfer processes.

A series of core-shell structure materials based on Ln-dpa complex and silica are prepared and the complex coating are generated on the surface of silica pheres successfully. The SiO2@Ln-dpa exhibits excellent luminescence properties. Furthermore, SiO2@Eu-dpa possesses highly selective and sensitive for acetone and Cu2+.

A 3D MOF {[Co(bibp)(1,4-chdc)][middle dot]2H2O}n (1) (bibp = 4,4[prime or minute]-bis(1-imidazolyl)biphenyl, 1,4-H2chdc = 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid) was hydrothermally synthesized. This framework buries an unprecedented self-catenated net with the highest topological density among the 4-coordinated nets. The photo-catalytic and electrochemical activities were investigated.

EPR spectroscopy and theoretical data show that the slow heterogeneous electron-transfer kinetics associated with the reduction of an 18-electron Mo(IV) acetato dihydride are a consequence of an [small eta]2-[small eta]1 rearrangement of the carboxylate ligand which gives a unique paramagnetic 17-electron Mo(III) dihydride.
