The complex [RuIII(EDTA)(NO2)]2- (EDTA4- = ethylenediaminetetraacetate), formed from the reaction of [RuIII(EDTA)(H2O)]- and NO2-, converts into [RuIII(EDTA)(NO+)] via proton coupled conversion at low pH or oxygen atom transfer from the coordinated nitrite ion to biological thiols (RSH) at high pH.
