A Pt monolayer supported on an Engel-Brewer alloy, Hf-Ir, is highly active in oxidizing ethylene glycol into CO2. This enhanced performance originates from the lattice mismatch between surface Pt and the Hf-Ir support and the highly reducible Hf oxide adjacent to Pt sites.
