Steric Hindrance

I am writing a laboratory report comparing the synthesis of esters (an Acid-Alcohol reaction) and the speed at which the bond between the carbocation and the lone pair(ed) oxygen occur. We are adding certain polar elements and using 1H NMR to identify what happened.

My question is what exactly is Steric Hindrance and how it would affect the speed at which bonding. I can't find it in my lecture notebook, so any help is much appreciated.

If the carbocation has bulky groups on it, it will be very dificult for the nucleophile to approach it.
