Aerogel

I've recently been doing micro and macrostructures. This seems a little ignorant of me but I understand that you can divide all substances up into crystalline, polycrystalline and amorphous structures. How would you describe Aerogel? What is it's structure like and how does that determine its extraordinary properties. I've only just started college so be detailed but nothing so technical that I won't understand please.

Thanks for any help or advice, Andrew Sellick
