Ionic compounds/non-metals

In reactions to form ionic compounds, non-metals generally: lose electrons, gain electrons, become non-metals, do not react?

I don't know how something can become a non-metal if it already is a non-metal?

the magority of non metals gain electrons, on the right side of carbon, carbon and silicon can do either because they are in the middle of an octet so they can either lose 4 or gain 4
